Anything that generates or is related to low temperatures is usually referred to by the term cryogenic. Gases that have been subjected to extremely low temperatures to turn into liquids or solids are referred to as cryogenics. Most of these gasses boil at a temperature that is low than -150 degrees centigrade. Two particular gases usually have greater boiling temperatures, but are still classified as cryogenic substances. These are nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide. This is worth knowing about Cryogenic gases.

Cryogenic substances occur as gases at room temperature and pressure. The process of liquefying them involves cooling them below room temperature and then subjecting them to high pressure. There are different circumstances under which cryogens become liquids. Nevertheless, there are two characteristics that cut across all cryogens. To begin with, they are extremely cold. Secondly, minute amounts of the liquid evaporate to form huge amounts of gas.

The vapor or gas that is released from cryogenic liquid is usually very cold. The low temperature of the gas usually allows it to condense moisture in the air around it. This results in the formation of a highly visible fog. If the cryogen is stored in tanks that are poorly insulated, it condenses the air around to form a liquid air mixture.

Working with cryogens can be a very risky job. As such, all people who work with these substances are required to have a good understanding of the risks that are associated with it. They are also required to employ appropriate safety measures to avoid accidents and injuries. There are several safety measures that have been invented for use by workers. It is important for workers to learn about them.

There are three main groups of cryogens. These are oxygen, inert gasses, and flammable gasses. Inert gasses are incapable of undergoing any type of chemical reactivity to any notable extent. For this reason, they are incombustible and do not support burning. Some of these gasses are neon, nitrogen, helium, argon and krypton.

As the name suggests, flammable gasses are flammable and burn in the presence of air. Liquefied gasses, hydrogen, and methane are some of the gasses in this groud. Because of the ability of oxygen to support combustion, it is usually categorized in its own category. In the presence of oxygen, most substances that are generally incombustible normally burn. When discussing cryogens, this necessitates considering oxygen separately.

Very importantly, cryogens should be stored carefully given the dangers associated with them. Thermally insulated containers are usually used for storage. Usually, these containers are designed to be able to withstand huge temperature differences. They can also tolerate temperature changes that occur rapidly.

There are several medical effects that cryogens can cause to the body. For instance, very cold gasses can cause burns on the skin which are similar to burns caused by heat. Exposure to extremely cold materials usually causes frostbites that cause the skin to appear waxy yellow in color. When tissues in the area of contact start to thaw, one experiences intense pain.
