One thing that makes it different is that it does not need the compounds or the ions to have a specific capability as long as they do not evaporate in some conditions put in the detector while the solvent evaporates at the same time. The conditions involve setting the temperature of the evaporation as well as the level of sensitivity and the gas and sample inert flow.

All it needs is for the compound to not evaporate on the detector while the solvent does. To make this type of evaporation happen, all it takes to work is to have the evaporation temperature set together with the sensitivity, inert and sample gas flow.
