Hospitals do a lot of testings, surgeries and use a lot of syringes a day. They have different kinds of wastes. From the trashes of the patients to the remains of what the doctors and nurses use in their field. They are using a lot of things that when disposed improperly, can cause a lot of negativities as well. One of which would pollution and infection.
Even though the private companies hired by hospitals to do the tasks have already finished the job multiple times, they are still double checked to make sure that they have already done it perfectly and that the trashes are free of any microorganisms that can cause infections. The test is done through a microbiological spore test indicator. This is used regularly to check if the initial treatment made by the company was effective.
Even though how sure the company who did the treatment is that they have already done their part, a second inspection will be done. This is to really make sure that aside from the procedure that they have followed, there will be a deeper test so there will be no problems at all after disposal.
The wastes are processed through a machine. They will be placed in a belt which will be the one to go through it and burn it. Since everything will turn to ashes after, they do not need to be separated from each other.
There is only one disadvantage in doing this procedure. It can contribute to pollution because of the emission generated during the steps. There is an institution who requires some standards to lessen the emission whenever this procedure is finish.
It does so because of the toxic gasses that it is producing while the burning process is being done. It will undergo emission testing but it still would not suffice to avoid pollution. The major reasons of this would be the production of dioxins and furans during the whole treatment process.
Another effective way would what we call autoclave. The garbage undergo sterilization. This is a way wherein the garbage could be recycled to be used with a different purpose but completely not for another medical reasons. It will not just undergo one process, after the autoclave a shredding procedure will be done which is called compaction. It is to make sure that those that are not safe to use will no longer be reassembled in any ways.
After the two processes, everything will already be disposed the way usual trashes are disposed. Unlike incineration, this process is not advisable for pathological wastes. It is because of the factors that are easily recognized after the treatment. Pathologicals may also contain some low levels of cytotoxic compounds or radioactive materials.
Proper waste disposal should not just be practiced with medical garbage. It is always best to make sure that garbage in any forms are being dumped accordingly and will not cause any harm to the people or the environment. Keeping ourselves and our surroundings clean reflects us, so we better learn how to do things accordingly.
