The 2 Drum Spill Pallet In Modern Manufacturing Plants

By Maryellen Lamb

Chemicals come in a variety of different sizes of barrels and drums, all of which can leak or corrode. The safe handling of them is job one when the plant you run has them in plain sight of all employees. The EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency as well as OSHA has specific regulations about the storage and use of chemicals, so a well thought out plan for handling them is appropriate. One of the elements of a good plan is the use of 2 drum spill pallet units.

Since a spill is a leak that is uncontrolled and hits the floor or other surface, containment is the important thing to consider. A spill will impact personnel, whether it is unhealthy or simply a slip hazard. The secondary containment system, that is called for in all regulations, is what these pallets will accommodate.

Normally, when a leak or spill occurs, the area is cleared of all personnel and uncontaminated material. Barriers are erected and the clean up is begun. The personnel for this have been trained to lay down the absorbent material and the neutralizing processes that will have to be done first.

Another one of those costs is the disposal of this material. All of the chemical that is absorbed and the material used to absorb it as well as any clothing contaminated by it must be placed in a special drum for the disposal company to handle. This will also include anything contaminated that can not be completely cleaned and sanitized.

This will also shut down the processing line for the amount of time it takes to clean it up and get approval from those agencies to proceed. The way to eliminate all of this time and money waste is to incorporate these specialized pallets into your chemical handling system. There are several different models with specific purposes.

These pallets are made from a non reactive material such as polyethylene material. They have grates installed in the top surface so chemicals that leak can flow into the bottom of the unit. Each size of pallet has enough capacity in their reservoir to hold all of the chemical that is contained in the barrels it is designed to hold.

When a leak is detected, they can be moved to a special chemical cleaning area for remediation. The drums can be removed and the leaking one can be drained into another properly marked container. The grates can be lifted to absorb, neutralize and clean up the chemical contained in the bottom. They can then be placed back into use.

The 2 drum spill pallet is a necessary part of any chemical handling system being used in manufacturing plants. It will assist in making all personnel safer and is one of the best ways to prevent the production line from having to be shut down. Whether the pallets have a covering for the storage that has to be done outside, or for prevention of theft or unauthorized use, all are available. They become more popular even as more and more chemicals are brought into play.
